About Hemorrhoid Embolization
Symptoms
Hemorrhoids are swollen veins in the anus or lower rectum. Hemorrhoids are very common. Although hemorrhoids can be asymptomatic, when symptoms do occur, they include bright red blood from the rectum, itching, aching, pain, or palpable lumps near the anus.
Diagnosis
Hemorrhoids are usually diagnosed by physical exam or colonoscopy.
Procedure
Hemorrhoid embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that can treat symptomatic hemorrhoids. During the embolization procedure, a small catheter is inserted into an artery in the upper thigh. Live x-ray is used to direct the catheter into the rectal arteries. Then, the culprit rectal arteries are occluded with permanent coils or plugs. The plugs reduce blood flow to hemorrhoids, decreasing swelling and improving symptoms.

Locations
Genicular artery embolization can be performed in our clinic or any of our hospital locations.
Hemorrhoid embolization is an outpatient, nonsurgical procedure with minimal downtime. The procedure is done in the office under conscious sedation and takes about 1 hour. After the procedure, you can go home. Most people resume normal activities the next day without any post-procedure pain.
