Genicular Artery Embolization
Knee pain can affect just about all facets of daily life. Genicular Arter Embolization (GAE) is a minimally invasive treatmet option with a short recovery time.
About Genicular Artery Embolization
Symptoms
Loss of normal cartilage in the knee joint leads to osteoarthritis. The symptoms of knee arthritis include inflammation, pain (especially after rest or activity), stiffness, swelling, and reduced range of motion. Genicular artery embolization is a minimally invasive procedure that treats the inflammation associated with symptomatic knee arthritis.
Diagnosis
Knee osteoarthritis is usually diagnosed with x-ray.
Procedure
During the embolization procedure, a small catheter is inserted into an artery in the upper thigh, and directed under live x-ray into the genicular arteries, which supply the inflamed knee joint. Then, permanent particles are injected into the areas of inflammation. The particles reduce blood flow to the areas of inflammation, reducing the chronic pain associated with arthritis.
Recovery
Locations
Genicular artery embolization can be performed in our clinic or any of our hospital locations.
Genicular artery embolization is an outpatient, nonsurgical procedure with minimal downtime. The procedure is done in the office under conscious sedation and takes about 1 hour. After the procedure, you can go home and resume light activities right away with minimal recovery time.
